Google Map of all the known cemeteries in the Hampton Roads Area.
What we have here is failure to plan things out. This cemetery is just a short walk from Magnolia Cemetery and you can tell by looking at the contrast in population between the two what a difference planing can make. This is a dying cemetery. The ground is giving way. Though some of these graves are less than 50 years old many of the of the tomb covers are cracked and the tombstones are sinking into the ground because this isn't the right kind of soil for a cemetery. Add to that the proximity to railroad tracks and the vibrations have caused some tombstones that should be sticking two feet or more out of the ground only have 9 or less inches seeing day light. One of the nice things about this cemetery is that a lot of the tombstones are not carved marble but cement. It gives this place a uniqueness that many places do not.
