If you spent as much time watching nature documentaries as I did as a kid you
come to the conclusion that some things only exist "elsewhere". So
much so that you think that you have to go on a 5 day expedition to
find anything really special.
This St. Andrews Cross (Argiope aurantia) spider is one of those things. Native to Oz I thought I would never find one. Here this pretty lady was the other day (Aug 15 2005) just sitting outside the mall waiting for her ride. I couldn't believe my luck. After looking around on the web I found a rumor that some organic farmers in North Carolina are using them for pest control. And as we are only about 30 miles from NC this helps explain why this gal had gone native so far away from her native land. |
